How to choose a breast pump?

New to buying a breast pump and are confused with the different kinds available in the market? No need to fret, for, we tell you all about what to look for while picking one. India has many brands that offer a variety but most of them are more or less the same. As long it serves the purpose and meets the basic requirement, buying a breast pump is quite simple, even if you’re shopping for one online.

The different types

Breast pumps come in various types and the most common one is the manual one. This one is operated by hand to create suction but it’s time consuming and takes effort as well. But, since this one does not need power supply, it’s portable. Then there are the ones that run on electricity; one is the single electric one wherein they run by a motor, which maybe battery-operated or it is electric. These also pump one breast at one time. The other is double electric, which are also operated by a motor but pump both the breasts simultaneously thus saving time. And lastly, there is the ‘multiuser’ which are basically hospital-grade pumps. These are most often used by hospitals, more specifically the neonatal care units in hospitals. These generally have a bigger motor and pump more and with proper maintenance several mothers can use them.

Size matters

The size of the cone-shaped cups, which are the breast shields, is important as these have to fit over the breasts and nipples. There’s a standard size, and if there’s a concern that this size would be small, checking with the company for other options is a good idea. Most often, replacement or larger shields are available and it’s good to make sure that the breast pump has two breast shields if you want to pump both breasts simultaneously. If you find it uncomfortable while pumping, then you definitely need a different size.

Easy to use

You need to ensure that the breast pump is easy to use according to your lifestyle. So, you have to know if you need a hands-free one as this would allow you to do other tasks as well. Or, if you need a portable one and easy to assemble and take off part for cleaning. You need to check if the product is lightweight, especially if you are travelling with it. Some also come in a case to carry them with a separate insulation section to store expressed milk. Make sure that the noise levels are low if using an electric pump as some are quieter than others. Also, if using an electric pump, you should be able to control its cycling speed and degree of suction to be comfortable for you

Effectiveness and durability

You need to check about the pump’s effectiveness and durability. The speed on the suction and the strength of suction of the breast pump determine the amount of milk that is produced in the least time. The frequency of the pump’s use determines the strength of the pump. So, you need to be sure of how often the pump would be used for it to last long, which would determine its durability. Also, check the warranty of the beat pump and always go for an original one.

Give hygiene utmost importance

A closed system breast pump is the best option as there’s a barrier between the collection case and the motor. Besides, it keeps the expressed milk pure by restricting outside air and not allowing it to contaminate the milk. Whereas, open air breast pumps do not have these barriers and so the milk that goes inside can cause the growth of moulds and contaminate the motor, making it impossible to be cleaned. So, a closed pump is always the best choice.

Buying a breast pump is simple and online platforms make it easier as well. Besides, they are more easily available now in India than even a decade before. So, do follow our tips and choose well.
